World Refugee Day 2023

World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20: a day to honor the more than 82 million people who have been forced to flee their homes due to threats such as violence, economic hardship, and food insecurity.

Peace Winds’ project for Syrian refugees living in camps in the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq includes upgrading substandard shelters, making homes and public facilities more accessible to people with disabilities, and providing work and training opportunities to help beneficiaries find jobs and support their families.

In addition to our normal project activities, Peace Winds staff in Iraq are celebrating World Refugee Day this year by providing materials and labor for maintenance on public spaces in three camps for Syrian refugees. Peace Winds aims to create a better environment for the residents of these camps, supporting hope and dignity.

Nearly 1.2 million Iraqis remain internally displaced, and the country hosts more than additional 250,000 refugees from other countries. 4.1 million Iraqis are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection while some 2.4 million people are in acute need of assistance.

Peace Winds would like to thank the U.S. Department of State: Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and the U.S. Consulate General Erbil for funding and supporting the project for homes and livelihoods. We would also like to thank our donors who make Peace Winds’ work with refugees possible.
