Success Story: Khansa and Yousif

Hear the story of Khansa and Yousif

Cash-for-Work (CfW) is a method that many NGOs use to provide temporary employment to the populations they are supporting. Peace Winds developed an innovative CfW program in 2018 when we began work supporting shelter upgrades and livelihood opportunities for Syrian refugees like Khansa and Yousif in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

However, rather than focusing on public construction and maintenance projects, Peace Winds’ CfW program allows refugees who are eligible for shelter upgrades to perform the construction work on their own shelters in exchange for cash payments. As a CfW participant, Yousif worked on part of the upgrade to his family’s shelter as an unskilled laborer, receiving cash assistance in exchange.
