Grief Care for South Korea’s Wildfire Survivors
Three weeks after devastating wildfires broke out in South Korea on March 21, Peace Winds began hosting psychosocial support group sessions for survivors. At that time, many evacuees were still living in evacuation centers such as motels and gymnasiums, so there was a common feeling of disorientation on top of the trauma that comes with surviving a major disaster.
With this in mind, Peace Winds partnered with the Moving On Mind Art Psychotherapy Center to launch the “Hands on Peace” grief care program. Group sessions focused on creativity, physical movement, and relaxation as a way to help participants relieve stress and build connections with others who experienced similar trauma.
Evacuees began transitioning into temporary housing units at the end of June after spending three months in evacuation centers. There is a strong sense of community between survivors, and they have generously supported one another throughout the transition period. However, there are still stories that are difficult to share in group settings.
Now that survivors are living in short-term housing, Peace Winds has partnered with Gonggamin, a psychosocial support organization, to provide private, one-on-one counseling sessions. Counselors prepare a welcoming setting where survivors feel comfortable enough to open up about their experience. Many have shed tears as they share feelings that they have not been able to express before.
The most heartbreaking moments are when survivors say things like, “I’m ashamed” or “I’m embarrassed to be getting this kind of help.” They are undoubtedly the victims, but they feel as if they have done something wrong. This feeling can stem from the helplessness of suddenly losing everything, or it can be fueled by a long-held tendency not to ask for help. It is our sincere hope that these grief care sessions will help survivors work through their experience and regain feelings of warmth toward themselves.
Peace Winds will continue to aid long-term recovery in South Korea in partnership with local organizations and communities. To support our work, please donate through our website and select “Korea Wildfires” in the dropdown menu.
