Peace Winds Field Clinic Treats Survivors in Venezuela

Peace Winds’ disaster medical team has set up a field clinic in Venezuela and begun treating earthquake survivors at Parque del Oeste in Caracas. Evacuees who have fled their homes are living here in tents, and with little to no sanitation, there is growing concern about infectious diseases. So Peace Winds doctors, nurses, and other disaster experts are helping patients get health checks as well as treatment for chronic diseases.

Our staff report that the damage and humanitarian needs are astonishing. Roughly 5,000 evacuees from Caracas as well as neighboring La Guaira are sheltering at Parque del Oeste. Many of them are children.

Clinics and hospitals have been damaged and destroyed across Caracas, and poor sanitation is further fueling the rapidly-growing need for medical care. There are limited toilets, hygiene products, soap, clean water, and other daily necessities in encampments like the one at Parque del Oeste. Concern is growing that those who survived the earthquakes now risk falling ill from infectious diseases that could spread rapidly, such as measles and cholera.

In addition to medical care, Peace Winds is distributing emergency supplies at evacuation shelters and encampments. These include hygiene items, sanitary pads, bottled water, juice for children, diapers, and other baby supplies. Much more is still needed. Your donations help us provide flexible support as needs evolve, both now and in the weeks and months ahead.
