Relief and Recovery in Nepal

Timeframe: 2015-Present

Peace Winds began working in Nepal by providing emergency aid after severe flooding and a major earthquake devastated communities throughout the country in 2015. In the long term, disaster-affected areas grappled with damage to infrastructure–including water supply lines–and farmland. This was particularly devastating for the many residents who earn their living as farmers.

Since then, Peace Winds has helped communities in central Nepal rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen resilience. Training programs have focused on innovation in agriculture for women’s groups, flood preparedness in farming, and entrepreneurship, helping farmers reduce costs and navigate local markets. This kind of support was especially critical in helping families earn a living after floods struck Melamchi in 2021.

Through 2023, Peace Winds also worked to bring safe drinking water to villages in hilly and mountainous areas of Sindhupalchok County, which was severely impacted by the 2015 earthquake. The program built water supply systems that now serve nearly 900 households.
