Supporting Education for Children and Young Adults in Mongolia

Timeframe: 1996-Present

From 1996 to 2006, Peace Winds operated a facility for homeless children and families in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city. Now, Peace Winds supports education for children and young adults in Ulaanbaatar at the Verbist Care Center (VCC). 

Many young children who cannot live with their parents due to poverty or other challenges live at the VCC, receiving elementary education and support from a community of “dormitory mothers,” sisters, and brothers. Peace Winds has supported the VCC’s educational goals by helping repair damaged classrooms and providing supplies such as desks, chairs, backpacks, and stationery. During their summer vacations, Peace Winds sponsors field trips into nature in the nearby grasslands. The VCC aims to help its young beneficiaries learn to be independent so that they can lead successful lives once they leave the center, and many go on to graduate high school, college, and/or receive vocational training in high-demand trades.
