Japan Typhoon Hagibis

Timeframe: 2019-2020

Peace Winds quickly responded to super Typhoon Hagibis, which hit Japan in mid-October, 2019, with search-and-rescue joining the Self Defense Forces finding and rescuing victims. Areas within several prefectures were flooded with Peace Winds aiding in evacuation taking victims to evacuation centers and providing food, clothing, and sanitation assistance. We continued to assist those displaced by the typhoon, from managing evacuation shelters to providing medical aid, essential items like linens and bedding, and emergency medical kits. The Peace Winds medical team also helped move hospitalized patients from Nagano’s Rehabilitation Center which had flooded and lost electricity.

In 2018, Peace Winds responded to the massive floods and landslides that devastated several prefectures in Western Japan after heavy rains struck on July 7 and 8. These prefectures are usually safe from natural disasters, with many people moving to these areas after the terrible 2011 earthquake and tsunami struck northern Japan.

Following these 2018 floods, Peace Winds supported the operations at the evacuation centers in Western Japan (Mihara-shi, Hiroshima and Kurashiki-shi, Okayama) ensuring no one, particularly the elderly, was forgotten. Peace Winds worked with the affected communities to provide prolonged accommodations and long-term recovery needs for the families whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

Peace Winds welcomes your support in our response to natural disasters which are becoming more frequent and intense.
