Providing Relief with Local Partners Following Maui Wildfire
On August 8, a number of wildfires broke out in Hawaii that were especially destructive to the historic town of Lahaina on the island of Maui. Due to the number of fatalities and vast destruction, the Lahaina Wildfire is now deemed the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century. One-hundred people lost their lives, with entire families among the fatalities, and nearly 1,500 homes and buildings were completely destroyed.
On August 16, a Peace Winds team arrived in Maui to aid survivors and assess the needs on the ground. Peace Winds staff distributed relief supplies at temporary shelters and gathered in-kind donations for wildfire-affected pets and pet owners.
Since then, with more than $250,000 from donors in Japan and around the world, Peace Winds has shifted its focus from short-term relief to supporting the long-term recovery process. We are partnering with local Hawaiian organizations, providing funding and in-kind psychosocial support, and meeting the needs of Maui’s homeless pets.
Peace Winds’ relief efforts in Maui are made possible by the Japan Platform and by donations from our supporters. Please click here to make a donation and to read regular updates from the field, and check out our blog posts below for more information. We appreciate your continued support.
