Medical Care for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh

Timeframe: 2017-Present

Many Rohingya people (a Muslim ethnic group) fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh in 2017 due to the armed crackdown against this ethnic minority in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Peace Winds responded immediately, working with local NGOs in the refugee camps to provide emergency medical treatment.

In January 2018, Peace Winds worked with local medical NGO Dhaka Community Hospital Trust (DCHT) to open a medical clinic at Camp 14, one of the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh. The clinic provides basic medical services, including 24/7 childbirth assistance, to approximately 34,000 displaced people living in the camp and to the Bangladeshi people in the surrounding area. The clinic celebrated its sixth anniversary in 2024, and the clinic and staff continue to receive high praise from patients for their quality of care, effective communication, and trustworthiness within the community.
