Myanmar Refugee Support
Peace Winds has been assisting Myanmar refugees who are fleeing due to conflict and violence in the region. Myanmar is a troubled area prone to numerous natural disasters and internal conflicts. Peace Winds assisted the region following the devastating 2008 Cyclone Nargis by providing emergency kits to 10,000 families, and supporting infrastructure development and livelihood training. Peace Winds continued to monitor the area as civil unrest grew and more disasters struck vulnerable areas.
In August 2017, the Rohingya people began fleeing by the thousands when tensions between the government and the minority group exploded into violence. Peace Winds has been active at the Bangladesh border, where over 680,000 Rohingya have fled, providing relief to the camps that have formed in Bangladesh.
Peace Winds has implemented a healthcare facility and established WASH (Water and Sanitation, Hygiene Assistance) programs. Peace Winds continues to improve conditions at these camps by partnering with local NGOs to install latrines, construct shelters, provide hygiene education, and to assist with child and maternal healthcare.
