From July 2 to July 10, 2012 Peace Winds America and the sister cities of Ho Chi Minh City – San Francisco and Hai Phong – Seattle launched the Vietnam-U.S. Sister Cities Disaster Preparedness Initiative. Participants met in Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and the capitol Hanoi to assess needs and design upcoming disaster preparedness workshops. PWA CEO Dr. Charles Aanenson led the U.S. team of senior representatives from the Seattle Office of Emergency Management, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management and the Asian Disaster Reduction Center in Japan.

The PWA delegation met with members of the Vietnam Disaster Management Center and the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control in Hanoi, city officials and emergency managers from Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City, NGOs, private sector representatives from the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Japan Business Associations, American Chambers of Commerce, U.S. Embassy staff, Port Authorities and others. Peace Winds America will work collaboratively with its partners, implementers and experts to craft the next stages of this two year program.

The Initiative will focus on enhanced disaster response plans, new and strengthened partnerships, economic resilience and business continuity. By engaging public and private sector stakeholders, the Initiative will generate workable disaster preparedness, response and risk reduction solutions at the city level.
