Supporting West Maui Community Organizations Through TY Management Fund
Peace Winds has regranted $750,000 to 20 community organizations involved in West Maui which had depended heavily on annual charitable donations from the proceeds of the PGA Sentry Golf Tournament in Kaplalua. The annual tournament normally brought an estimated $50 million in economic activity to the area, which is still reeling from the August 2023 wildfires. It was scheduled for January 2026 but had to be cancelled after insufficient water supply damaged the Plantation Golf Course’s greens.
To help mitigate the impact on the community, the owner of the golf course, Tadashi Yanai, made a personal donation to Peace Winds through his TY Management Corporation. Peace Winds had already channeled more than $1.2 million in donations and grants from Japan and elsewhere to support the recovery of Lahaina and the broader West Maui community, so it was well-positioned to play a role as a philanthropic intermediary to aid the community. Peace Winds is glad to support the work of the following organizations through this initiative:
- Maui United Way: Undertaking disaster recovery initiatives and strengthening support services for West Maui nonprofits.
- Hale Makua Health Services: Providing essential healthcare services for Maui’s elderly and frail residents.
- Lahainaluna High School Foundation: Providing educational and extracurricular opportunities for students, including sports and music programs, after school clubs, and scholarship programs.
- Ka Lima O Maui: Helping disabled adults build self-reliance and meaningful community connections, such as by offering job training programs, employment opportunities, and running a day center with engaging activities for those with more severe needs.
- Scouting America – Aloha Council: Offering youth development and leadership programs across Hawaii, including hosting camp experiences, running educational programs, and offering scholarships.
- Maui Food Bank: Collecting, warehousing, and distributing food to Maui residents at risk of going hungry, including through the rescue of surplus food, bulk purchasing, and targeted food distribution programs.
- Aloha Puʻu Kukui Watershed: Maintaining a healthy watershed for drinking and agriculture on West Maui through environmental sustainability projects and community events and awareness.
- J. Walter Cameron Center: Facilitating connections between Maui residents and local nonprofits and services, such as by offering meeting and workshop spaces.
- Lahaina Junior Golf Association: Creating sportsmanship opportunities for Maui’s youth through golf lessons, tournaments, and mentorship programs.
- Hawaii State Junior Golf Association: Building character and leadership skills for Hawaii’s youth through golf through school programs, clinics, travel opportunities, and college workshops.
- Maui Junior Golf Association: Providing development and competitive opportunities for aspiring young golfers on Maui through affordable lessons, tournaments, and educational programs.
- University of Hawaii – Maui College: Offering training and mentorship for students, including scholarships for hospitality and culinary students as part of the Live Aloha Mentorship Program.
- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui – Lahaina: Supporting educational and leadership development for children and teens in Maui, including with after-school and youth development programs that offer academic enrichment, leadership training, and recreational activities.
- Hua Momona Farms: Providing food, youth development, and other opportunities to the Maui community, including distributing hot meals and running a youth music program for those affected by the 2023 fires.
- Maui Strikers Soccer Club: Providing year-round soccer programs for youth through coaching and tournaments.
- Kapalua Maui Charities: Supports local community organizations and projects, such as by furthering culinary education, cultural appreciation, and tourism through the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival.
- Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, CT: Providing literacy education opportunities for adults through tutoring, classes, and tests. This contribution is made in honor of Chris Berman for his contributions to the Maui community.
