Early November update from Palu, Indonesia

Peace Winds continues to monitor families affected by the September 28 earthquake and tsunami that struck Sulawesi, Indonesia.  As of November 6, over 211,000 people are living in temporary shelters across three affected districts (Pal, Dongara and Shigi).  Many families lost not only their homes and loved ones but all personal belongings.  They live in the shelters with almost nothing.

The city of Palu was hardest struck by the dual disasters.  Families continue receiving food assistance, but cooking supplies and tools are limited.  On November 9, Peace Winds and local partner ACT delivered supplies to 300 families living in Shigi shelters, including rice, oil, canned fish, sugar, and black tea.  Peace Winds distributed pots, dishes, and propane stoves, and will continue providing more cooking utensils and supplies to families.

A Peace Winds’ staff member remarked how household supplies brought much joy to the families: “Seeing the women’s faces light up so much when they saw the stove and cooking utensils was great.  The families have been mostly receiving food items.  When we brought cooking supplies, the women thanked us again and again.”  Peace Winds plans to support 6,000 families with basic household and food items.
