Peace Winds supporting families following Sulawesi, Indonesia earthquake and tsunami

On September 28, 2018 a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, triggering a tsunami and causing major devastation in the area.  On October 1, 2018 Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) staff reached the island and began assessing areas in Palu city, where liquefaction and landslides destroyed several parts of the city.

Together with their local partner ACT (Aksi Cepat Tanggap), Peace Winds’ emergency team identified immediate needs for emergency relief.  Many affected communities had difficulty securing water and food to sustain their families due to limited electricity and debris-covered roads.  Peace Winds and ACT distributed basic food items (rice, oil, sugar, canned fish, and tea).

The over 2,000 death toll continues to rise, with 2,500 severely injured and 87,000 displaced people living at camp sites.  Families have suffered frequent aftershocks, leaving people even more terrified and vulnerable.  Plans for recovery are beginning.  Now support is needed for families who have lost everything.

Peace Winds continues to respond to the families in need, and is determining next steps of recovery.
