Wildfire Relief & Recovery in Los Angeles
On January 7, 2025, a series of wildfires broke out in Los Angeles, California, killing 30 people and displacing tens of thousands. In the days that followed, Peace Winds dispatched a team to conduct needs assessments and distribute relief supplies. Staff focused their efforts on the Altadena area, which received less media attention than more affluent areas despite sustaining the majority of the damage in the fires.
With support from donors in Japan and the United States, Peace Winds later provided grants to four local organizations playing critical roles in relief and recovery in the hardest-hit areas:
- Home Bank LA – Providing furniture and home goods to residents who lost their homes in the fires and need help refurbishing new apartments and houses.
- Neighborhood Legal Services of LA County – Providing pro bono and low-cost legal services to survivors navigating issues with their homes, landlords and rental units, FEMA assistance, and other legal matters.
- Pasadena Community Job Center – Helping day laborers stay safe from ash and debris while connecting them with work opportunities related to wildfire cleanup, and providing survivors with case management services, food, and supplies.
- San Diego Humane Society – Housing and caring for homeless animals and other pets affected by the fires while reuniting families with their missing pets.
