Türkiye & Syria Emergency Response
On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Türkiye. A second earthquake and subsequent aftershocks destroyed homes and buildings throughout eastern Türkiye and parts of Syria, and more than 50,000 people were killed.
Immediately following the disaster, Peace Winds dispatched our flying search-and-rescue medical team, ARROWS, and staff members arrived on the ground in Türkiye to provide support for temporary shelters. In the short term, relief efforts included aiding in search-and-rescue, providing medical supplies and support to field hospitals, and delivering basic necessities to shelters such as food, water, blankets, and hygiene items.
Peace Winds also operated a temporary clinic in Gaziantep, Türkiye in the weeks following the quake. Here, Peace Winds doctors and nurses could safely provide medical care to survivors. More than a year later, Peace Winds continues to provide mental health and grief care to children and families who lost their homes and loved ones in the disaster.
