Emergency Humanitarian Assistance for Afghanistan

Timeframe: 2001-Present

Peace Winds began providing emergency assistance to Afghans in 2001 following the rise of the Taliban and the start of the war in Afghanistan that same year. Subsequently, Peace Winds remained in Afghanistan to help build schools, repair roads, support the increase of income for women, drill wells, and provide access to clean water.

More recently, in response to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan following the United States’ withdrawal of troops in August 2021, Peace Winds continues to work with our local partner, Your Voice Organization, to provide food assistance to residents of Nangarhar Province in the eastern part of the country.

Many Afghans currently suffer from food insecurity due to droughts and water scarcity. Peace Winds has been present in Kandahar Province in southeastern Afghanistan which is home to many displaced people as well as returnees from Iran and Pakistan, and in 2020, we helped install a new well so that residents now have easy access to clean drinking water

Response to 2023 Earthquakes

In early October 2023, a series of earthquakes and aftershocks in western Afghanistan killed more than 2,000 people and left hundreds of homes and buildings destroyed. Peace Winds is working with a local partner organization to provide aid in Afghanistan’s Zinda Jan District, near the epicenter in Herat Province. Teams are especially focused on providing everyday essential items to survivors in remote villages where aid is scarce. See Peace Winds’ blog posts below for more updates.
