Emergency Disaster Relief in Indonesia

Timeframe: 1997-Present

In 1997, Peace Winds provided emergency assistance to those affected by the drought on the island of Irian Jaya (West Papua). Since then, we have been working with local Indonesian NGOs in each region to provide support after natural disasters and for internally displaced persons. In 2004, Peace Winds distributed medicine and food to Indonesians affected by the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami and continued to provide long-term support to rebuild homes, roads, and agricultural infrastructure. After the 2009 earthquake off Padang, Sumatra, Peace Winds distributed emergency supplies and water supply support, and in 2018, we provided emergency relief after the earthquakes in Lombok Island and Central Sulawesi.

On November 21, 2022, Java, Indonesia was struck by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. Peace Winds responded immediately by distributing necessities like food packages, wet wipes, blankets, and bedding to people living in evacuation camps.

In addition to providing emergency assistance in the wake of disasters, Peace Winds supports disaster preparedness efforts in Indonesia. Since October 2021, our teams have been holding disaster preparedness drills in partnership with the local government. The drills help residents prepare for natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes by teaching them skills like best evacuation practices, risk assessment and avoidance, and how to treat injured survivors. Unfortunately, disasters like these are inevitable, so Peace Winds strives to help Indonesians stay as safe as possible in the event of an emergency.
