Philippines Typhoon Haiyan

Timeframe: 2013 - 2015

Super Typhoon Haiyan wrought destruction across the central Philippines in November 2013, the same time Peace Winds America was implementing its U.S.-Japan-Philippines Civil Military Initiative. Peace Winds was well-positioned to provide immediate relief in the areas of Samar and Leyte. Both Peace Winds Japan and Peace Winds America partnered with the Philippine NGO Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) providing shelter, food, transportation, and sanitation/hygiene kits in the greater Tacloban areas.

Peace Winds America also provided recovery to Busuanga Island, an under-served area in western Philippines hit hard by the super storm.  In partnership with two local NGOs, PWA focused on economic recovery, enabling local farming and fishing families to return to work.  Peace Winds America rebuilt houses, repaired boats and nets, seeded fields, and nurtured new livestock, while providing disaster training. The Busuanga recovery programs reached over 1,000 local families spread across six barangays.
