Supporting Ukrainian Refugees in Moldova
Since February 24, 2022, more than 1 million people displaced by the war in Ukraine have crossed the border into Moldova. Now, more than 100,000 continue to live in the country as refugees.
Immediately after Russian military forces launched operations against Ukraine in 2022, Peace Winds set up a base in Moldova where staff provided food, hygiene supplies, and other emergency items at evacuation centers. Peace Winds doctors, nurses, and other responders also collaborated with partner organizations to operate field clinics and distribute medical supplies.
Because it is such a small country, and one of Europe’s most under-resourced, supporting refugees is often a heavy lift for Moldovan society. Peace Winds continues working to meet the long-term needs of Ukrainian refugees and the local Moldovan communities that support them. Programs encompass the provision of food and daily supplies, education and healthcare support, and renovation projects at schools that accept Ukrainian refugee children.
