Emergency Assistance in Myanmar

Timeframe: 2008-Present

Peace Winds began working in Myanmar in 2008 and has since run 40+ projects for vulnerable communities in the country as well as for refugees who have fled Myanmar. Myanmar is one of Asia’s poorest countries and it has been wracked by civil war following a 2021 military coup. Programs include emergency disaster response; the provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene services; and food assistance for those displaced by the ongoing civil war.

Peace Winds’ Response to the March 2025 Earthquake

On March 28, 2025 a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful in a century, struck Myanmar with an epicenter in Sagaing State, near Mandalay. Peace Winds mobilized immediately, drawing on teams who were already on the ground in Myanmar as well as in Thailand. Our ARROWS disaster medical team was one of the few that managed to enter the country. Doctors and nurses set up a field clinic in Sagaing City, at the epicenter, and treated patients in desperate need of medical care for about two weeks.

Staff are now distributing food and essential supplies to survivors who lost their homes throughout the disaster zone, both directly and in collaboration with local partners. Peace Winds is also working with local partner organizations to plan activities for long-term recovery. Donations to our work in Myanmar will help us continue to save lives through this work.
