Disaster Response in Indonesia

Timeframe: 1997-Present

In 1997, Peace Winds provided emergency assistance to those affected by the drought on West Papua. Since then, we have been working with local Indonesian NGOs in each region to provide support for disaster survivors and internally displaced persons.

In 2004, Peace Winds distributed medicine and food to Indonesians affected by the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami and continued to provide long-term support to rebuild homes, roads, and agricultural infrastructure. Peace Winds also delivered emergency aid after the 2009 earthquake off Padang, Sumatra, the earthquakes in Lombok Island and Central Sulawesi in 2018, and the earthquake in Java in 2022.

In addition to emergency response in the wake of disasters, Peace Winds has carried out disaster preparedness programs in partnership with local governments. Drills help residents prepare for disasters such as floods and earthquakes by teaching skills like evacuation best practices, risk assessment and avoidance, and basic first aid.
