Peace Winds Responds to Deadly Myanmar Earthquake

On Friday March 28, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck with an epicenter in Sagaing State in Myanmar, near Mandalay. Peace Winds will be providing emergency aid, mobilizing its teams on the ground in Myanmar and Thailand as well as its ARROWS disaster medical team

The earthquake is the strongest in a century, and damage has been seen as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, 600 miles from the epicenter. As of March 29, at least 1,000 people are reported dead, and many more are missing with the death toll expected to rise dramatically. Myanmar is one of Asia’s poorest countries and was already wracked by civil war following the military coup in 2021, adding to the difficulty of aiding survivors.

Peace Winds has a long history working throughout Myanmar, providing humanitarian supplies, shelter materials, safe water, and other necessary services. It also operates programs to support Burmese in Thailand along the Thailand-Myanmar border. Peace Winds also mobilized in 2008 to provide emergency relief to survivors of Cyclone Nargis and in 2015 after severe flooding killed many in Myanmar.

Peace Winds staff on the ground in Myanmar and Thailand have been working with our local partners to assess needs and how to best channel humanitarian assistance for affected communities. They will plan to distribute food assistance, shelter materials, and other emergency supplies into hard-to-reach areas of the country, and the response will evolve as the needs change on the ground.
