Peace Winds Works with Partners to Support Afghanistan Following Earthquakes

Peace Winds partner staff member speaks with earthquake survivor in Zinda Jan District

On October 7, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan. The quake and subsequent aftershocks have brought the death toll to 2,000, with hundreds of homes having been destroyed as well. Yet another quake shook the area on October 11, and although no deaths have been reported, hundreds of homes were destroyed in a village that had been untouched by the first earthquake.

Teams from Peace Winds’ partner organizations arrived in Afghanistan’s Zinda Jan District, near the epicenter in Herat Province, on October 10 to assess the damage and begin providing relief. One staff member told us, “Even if it weren’t for natural disasters, yet another major earthquake has struck at a time when many people are suffering day by day amidst political instability and poverty.” Even in urban areas that suffered less damage from the quakes, many people are living in tents and sleeping on the streets at night for fear of aftershocks.

Peace Winds is currently working with local partners to assess the needs of Afghanistan’s earthquake survivors and will remain on the ground providing support.
