Peace Winds staff provide aid following earthquake in Morocco

On September 11, six Peace Winds staff members arrived in Morocco to assess needs and provide support to survivors of the earthquake that struck the country on September 8. The epicenter of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake is located in a mountainous region about 43 miles outside of Marrakesh, but many homes and historic buildings in and around the city have been damaged or destroyed.

Peace Winds’ team in Morocco found that survivors’ needs were greater closer to the epicenter in Amizmiz. Many of the town’s residents are now living in tents outside their homes. The aftershocks here are substantial, and many survivors are dealing with minor health issues such as aches and pains and the inability to sleep in a stressful, changing environment. Peace Winds’ Nurse Kikuchi has been providing medical and emotional support to those in need.

After wells and water supply lines were damaged by the quake, one of the greatest needs in the mountain villages is water. Peace Winds staff have been delivering food and water to survivors here, who have been incredibly grateful.

While some evacuees’ homes are still standing, many have suffered damage that makes it dangerous to be inside. Peace Winds knows that the road to recovery in Morocco will be long, and we will continue to provide support and bring updates as we are able. We appreciate your continued support.
