Peace Winds Responds to Los Angeles Wildfires

Wildfire destruction in Malibu, California

A series of deadly wildfires are burning in and around Los Angeles, California. As of January 13, 24 people have been killed in the disaster, and many more are still missing. Nearly 100,000 people are under evacuation orders as the fires have already damaged or destroyed more than 12,300 structures.

Dry conditions and high winds are contributing to the rapid spread of the fires, which are now being reported as among the most destructive in the state’s history. Roughly 40,000 acres (nearly 63 square miles) have already burned.

On Friday January 10, a team of Peace Winds staff from Japan and the United States arrived on the ground to conduct needs assessments and determine how best to support communities affected by the fires. The team has visited a number of evacuation centers where volunteers are distributing relief supplies and is talking with local grassroots organizations that are supporting the most affected communities. As the situation develops, Peace Winds will be aiding evacuees who have lost their homes as well as local animal shelters that are caring for the pets of displaced individuals.
