Peace Winds Reports to Third Grade Fundraisers

Souma Yabuki and Aria Kischner are two exceptional young leaders.  These two third graders, along with the rest of their class at TOPS K-8 School in Seattle, Washington, raised over $2,000 to help victims of the March 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  On May 15, 2011, the third graders hand delivered the donations to Peace Winds America.

One year later, Peace Winds America reported to the now fourth graders how the money was spent.  CEO Chuck Aanenson presented PWA’s disaster recovery efforts to show the outcomes of the fundraiser.  The children were excited to hear that they helped provide heat to temporary homes and revive the Tohoku fishing industry.  Co-organizer Kischner affirmed that the fundraiser,  “Really worked, and the money wasn’t spent just on candy.  It was really helping people.”  After seeing the results of their hard work, TOPS classmates are considering another fundraising drive.

The children’s efforts to aid families thousands of miles away is commendable.  To show appreciation PWA gave each child a peace crane handmade in Japan and disaster recovery photographs.
