Last year, Peace Winds collected drawings from children living in many of the countries where we work for the 2023 calendar. In Nepal, 19 children from an international primary school participated, one of whom is 8-year-old Ankita. The theme of the drawing contest, “My Dream,” encouraged children to dream big even in the midst of fear and conflict.

Ankita’s drawing shows her house and kitchen in Nepal surrounded by mountains, trees, and a flock of birds. Because the country is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest, many of Ankita’s classmates’ drawings featured a mountain range as well.

Ankita loves cooking and eating with her family, and her favorite place in her home is the kitchen. She also told Peace Winds staff that she dreams of becoming a teacher when she grows up. “I’m sure that in the future, I will live in a house with a kitchen like this, and I will work as a teacher,” Ankita said.

On a beautiful sunny day, teachers and Peace Winds staff held the awards ceremony for the children’s drawings at Ankita’s school. All the students who participated in the art festival received a letter of appreciation, and Ankita, who was selected as the representative of Nepal for the calendar contest, was presented with Peace Winds’ 2023 “World Children’s Art Festival” calendar. Perhaps surprised that her drawing was chosen, Ankita walked up to receive her award with a nervous look on her face, but her classmates shouted words of support.

The principal of Ankita’s school was very pleased that the children got to participate in the drawing contest. The event made for a joyous day with older students helping out the younger children and warm welcomes from Peace Winds and school staff.

Peace Winds looks forward to seeing the artwork these children create during next year’s festival!

About Peace Winds Activities in Nepal

Peace Winds has been active in Nepal since 2015 following severe flooding and the major earthquake that occurred in the country that year. In recent years, Peace Winds has supported disaster preparedness efforts in flood-prone areas as well as relief and recovery efforts following these disasters. Ongoing support includes building and repairing water wells to bring safe drinking water to residents of rural areas, and in March 2023, a group of Nepalese women traveled to the Peace Winds Japan headquarters in Hiroshima to pilot an agricultural training program. The women were excited to learn about cutting-edge farming techniques so they could implement them at home in Nepal.
