Peace Winds improves lives and farms following Typhoon Mangkhut
The Philippines – Typhoon Mangkhut brought extensive damage to rice and corn fields in north central province of Luzon. Peace Winds America and the Citizens Disaster Response Corps have supported 2,700 family households distributing food, basic necessities, and hygiene kits.
Returning to devastated farms and homes was difficult as many roads had been washed out by mudslides resulting in strained evacuation efforts by the Government and community centers. By the end of 2018, the Government and the military have restored access to most of the roads.
Farming communities worked together to salvage damaged crops that enabled them to feed their animals that had survived the disaster. Late in 2018, the farmers had replanted their rice and corn crop from seeds distributed by Peace Winds, enabling farmers to focus their remaining savings and efforts on rebuilding crop storage facilities, warehouses, and homes.
As of late 2018, many evacuees have returned to the communities and farms, rebuilding using donated cinder blocks and tin roofs. The Citizens Disaster Response Corps continues to provide food and non-food items to families as they transitioned from the evacuation centers moving back into their homes.
Peace Winds and the Citizens Disaster Response Corps greatly appreciate your support as families regain their livelihoods.
