September 6: Peace Winds dispatched search and rescue to Atsuma, Hokkaido
On September 6, a massive 6.7 earthquake struck Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. The earthquake (Heisei 30 Eastern Earthquake) triggered landslides, grounded transportation, caused heavy damages to roads, and disconnected power for thousands around the island.
Peace Winds immediately dispatched a search and rescue team to the area of Atsuma, where the earthquake was strongest and multiple landslides occurred. Peace Winds sent 23 members to assist with search and rescue efforts, including three dogs and several doctors and nurses. The rescue team continues to search for the missing while the medical team is working in cooperation with local teams to treat injured survivors.
Peace Winds continues supporting search and rescue efforts and assisting medical treatment. Restoration of power and other infrastructure is underway across the island. Peace Winds will evaluate damages and provide further support if needed.
