Four Months After the Earthquake: Continuing Support for Hatay Province, Türkiye
June 6 marked four months since the devastating earthquake in Türkiye that killed more than 50,000 people. In Hatay Province, where Peace Winds has been working to support residents hit particularly hard by the disaster, nearly 46,000 people were sharing a total of 9,150 tents as of the end of March. The Turkish government has begun moving earthquake survivors from tents into more durable temporary housing; however, the shipment of materials for these shelters has been delayed, forcing residents to continue living in tents.
To support these vulnerable families, Peace Winds is continuing to provide food and essential relief supplies within Hatay Province. Between the end of April through the beginning of June, Peace Winds distributed 1,800 food kits to residents of Tanışma and Madenboyu Villages. With evacuees beginning to return to their homes in villages like these, Peace Winds has increased the number of food kits from the original plan to ensure that every family in need receives food assistance.
In Tanışma and Madenboyu Villages, it is estimated that between 70 and 80 percent of the population is still living in temporary tents. This includes refugees who were already displaced from their homes in Syria and evacuees from other areas of Türkiye.
The situation for earthquake survivors in Türkiye improves a little each day. However, as the weather warms and the hot summer approaches, Peace Winds knows that needs are constantly evolving, and we will continue to support the people of Hatay Province with distribution of food and daily essentials. With your generous donations our teams are currently planning to expand distribution to other municipalities such as Avsuyu, another village that was particularly devastated by the earthquake.
Peace Winds’ support for earthquake survivors in Türkiye is made possible with support from the Japan Platform and from individual donations from our followers.
