Earthquake Response in Ishikawa, Japan: Jan 1, 2024
A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto Peninsula on Japan’s west coast at 4:15 p.m. JST on January 1, 2024, as families were celebrating the New Year’s holiday. Initial reports indicate that houses and buildings have collapsed and power has been cut to more than 30,000 households amidst near-freezing temperatures.
On the evening of January 1, Peace Winds Japan dispatched an eight-person team from its ARROWS disaster response team. The team includes doctors and nurses who specialize in emergency medicine and search-and-rescue work, and they are traveling by land from their Hiroshima headquarters. They will assess the needs on the ground and be joined on January 2 by a second team traveling with Peace Winds search-and-rescue helicopters. Depending on the needs on the ground, they will prepare to conduct search and rescue in collapsed buildings, including with their dog teams; provide emergency medical care; and set up a platform to distribute emergency supplies.
New donations to Peace Winds’ “Japan Disaster: Relief & Recovery” will be used to support these relief activities in Ishikawa as well as broader disaster preparedness efforts.
