Emergency Aid for Afghanistan’s Earthquake Survivors
Peace Winds is working with local partners in Afghanistan to assess needs and provide emergency aid after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the eastern part of the country late on Sunday August 31. At least 1,400 people have been killed in the disaster, with another 3,100 injured.
The hardest-hit areas are remote and mountainous, and because roads and other infrastructure have been badly damaged, it is difficult to deliver aid by car. Partner staff are traveling to affected communities on foot to conduct assessments. After losing their homes and belongings, many people are in need of food, water, hygiene supplies, and other everyday essentials, as well as medical supplies. Peace Winds and our partners will continue to evaluate the situation and deliver aid in accordance with the needs of the affected communities.

Peace Winds has been supporting communities affected by war and violence in Afghanistan since 2001. Programs focused on infrastructure rehabilitation for schools and roads, livelihood support for women, and access to clean water. Since 2018, Peace Winds has been collaborating with local partner organizations to support survivors of droughts and earthquakes, increase education opportunities for children, and create livelihood opportunities and food security for vulnerable families.
