The Sri Lanka government describes the recent floods as the worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. The deadly floods affected over one million people and ruined much of the country’s rice crop, especially in the eastern provinces.
Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) responded immediately to the floods, distributing food in the Mutur District of eastern Sri Lanka. A nearby PWJ development project allowed the timely relief by PWJ staff.
Currently more than 5000 citizens are being evacuated from this region. Road closures continue to disrupt this process.
